Catch up post: Ed Sheeran(5): Week of November,20th 2021(Mini Countdown review)
Ed Sheeran(5): Week of November,20th, 2021
Hello everybody what’s up. I thought I’d do a little mini review of last weeks countdown and Hitbound to make up for what happened with my original post from last week, and to minimize my time when writing out this weeks post, so I won’t have to review all of last weeks debuts and stuff in that one. By the time this is published it’s Wednesday, November, 24th and the next countdown actually airs tomorrow since it’s Thanksgiving, so that’s one reason why I won’t be listing out the full countdown here just cuz not all songs had big jumps or drops and so not every song really matters when the next countdown will air tomorrow anyways. If you want to see the full countdown though go over to Belugas blog and check out his post. one last thing I’ll be doing some predictions at the end of this post for this weeks countdown so stick around for that and now I present to You the exits for this past week.
Exits
Oliver Tree-Life goes on(28)
bbno$/Rich Brian-Edamame(26)
Troye Sivan-Angel baby(22)
Doja Cat/The weeknd-You right(10)
Ok so first off Life’s goes on went back to Hitbound and I’m glad they’re holding it back there, but I ended up upgrading it to red because surprisingly enough I’ve found a new song that’s way more annoying than this and it’s THIS weeks(not the week I’m reviewing but this upcoming weeks) countdown extra and Hitbound song of the week. I’ll explain more about that when I get to Hitbound but for right now all I’ll say about this is hopefully it doesn’t Re-enter.
We also have Edamame going into the abyss this week. I don’t really mind this because it seems as if countdown songs that leave and then go to the abyss don’t Re-enter anyways(look at Hurricane as an example of that) I’d be perfectly fine if this didn’t Re-enter anyways cuz it just isn’t good at all. Hopefully this is lost also
On the other hand of really unexpected and unfortunate exits we lost both Angel baby and You right. Angel baby was really good and should’ve stayed longer, although it’s not really gaining much traction elsewhere, and You right was starting to get a bit old honestly, but I would’ve been alright if Hits 1 had kept it for a few more weeks. Great songs and they will be both missed.
Debuts
Twenty one pilots-The outside(Debuting at #29 after 1 week on Hitbound)
Alright so 3/4 of these debuts I reviewed last week for Hitbound and now they’re here. Starting off first with The Outside at #29. This song is great but it’s not as good as Saturday. I like the production here, although the intro is a bit long. Tyler Joseph sounds really good here vocally. The lyrics are also very catchy, although I’m not sure exactly what they’re talking about here. My only main issue with this(and it’s a Hits 1 issue) is that they edited out the last part of the song which happens to be my favorite part of the song. Overall I can deal with that though so not bad. Next
Avril Lavigne-Bite Me(Debuting at #25 after 1 week on Hitbound)
Ok so when I wrote out my initial post for this past week, I still didn’t really like this song but I think I need to give it more listens to see if it grows on me or not. I didn’t know this was produced by Travis Barker either so that’s one thing I like about this. I’ll give a more formal review in this weeks post.
Taylor Swift/Ed Sheeran-Run(Debuting at #23 after 1 week in Hitbound)
alright so Ed has 2 songs debuting this week and I had to downgrade this one because of the next one. So this is a non-single from Taylor’s new re-recorded version of Red and it’s really good. Taylor and Ed have great vocals here, and their chemistry is amazing. The folklorish style production is really nice here to, I like how they went for that instead of an upbeat 2012 sounding song(which we’ll get to in Hitbound) so it sounds more of what something Taylor produced in Evermore. That folklorish vibe really fits in well here to. Lyrically it’s sad but it’s got a really good story to it. Personally I’d anyone hasn’t checked it out yet I would it’s amazing.
Ed Sheeran-Overpass Graffiti(Debuting at #19 after 2 weeks in Hitbound and 1 week in the abyss)
Ok so this has really grown on me throughout the time it’s been here, it’s like every listen to this one gets better and better. Ed has some really nice vocals here and surprisingly enough he fits in with the production, which is an 80s style beat which is really good(of course If you don’t know I’m a sucker when it comes to 80s beats in modern music) the beat sounds awesome here, and I really love the lyrics which are about an ex-girlfriend of Ed’s that he yearned to see again and promised to never forget(I read about that on Apple Music as it leads this weeks A-List pop playlist) so overall interesting story, great beat and really great vocals. Awesome song.
This weeks biggest jumps and drops were both interesting as 2 songs moved +8 spots and 2 moved -8 spots.
Biggest Jump of the week(+8): Doja Cat-Need to know & Coldplay/BTS-My universe.
Ok so Need to know jumped from #16 to #8 as it gained a lot of AirPlay. Do we really need this here I mean come on this song gets more annoying every time I listen to it. Get this garbage out of here.
On the other hand we had My universe jump from #15 to #7 as it also gained a lot of AirPlay. I’m definitely alright with this, and on a really interesting note it becomes BTS,s biggest song on Hits 1 as this is the song of theirs that has hit the highest peak on the countdown. Nice to see that.
Biggest drop of the week(-8): Walker Hayes-Fancy like & Twenty one pilots-Saturday
First we have fancy like moving -8 from #7 to #15 and this I’m actually alright with as it’s losing traction elsewhere. It’s a good song though and I’d really hate to see it go if it was replaced by U Gurl, which has really faded on me now. I’d say U Gurl is the worst country song I’ve ever heard in my life, at least we got this though.
Saturday also dropped and while I don’t mind this, the song was really good and has a long run here, but now it’s time to let The Outside take ever I guess. Let’s see how that works out as Hits 1 particularly tends to love Twenty one pilots music.
Hitbound debuts
Masked Wolf/Bebe Rexha-it’s You, not me(Sabotage)
Alright I was really excited to listen to this. Apparently this is a re-make of an old Bebe Rexha ballad called Sabotage, and it’s really good. Bebe Rexha sounds awesome in the chorus and Masked Wolf did a really great job writing the lyrics on the verses. The lyrics are great, it’s catchy, and the production is basic but it fits the song really well. I hope this can manage to debut.
Taylor Swift-Mesaage in a bottle
As far as Taylor’s upbeat music goes this has to be her best sounding upbeat song since Bad Blood in 2015. The production here is really great, it actually sounds like something I’d expect to hear when Red was initially put out in 2012, but with some more modern sounding instruments and sounds used. Taylor sounds amazing here to and the lyrics are catchy and the story is great to. Taylor you have been on fire lately with the new songs keep this up please.
Acraze/Cherish-Do it to it
Ok so if y’all have seen my reviews y’all probably know that I love house music, this though yeah this is not good. It’s a remix of a 2006 song by some girl group called Cherish. This doesn’t impress me though for house music. Cherish doesn’t sound good here, and the lyrics are just a few lines repeated over and over the whole time which is really stupid. Acraze did alright with the production but for a house beat I’ve heard way better, as this one just doesn’t sound like something radio would wanna pick up(note this did get a lot of radio adds this week) at least it doesn’t have any saxophones in it like Love tonight did. Overall not that great.
Iann Dior-Let You
This is pretty good, but not amazing. Iann Dior sounds really good here and the production is fun. My main concern is that it’s a bit forgettable and can get boring to listen to. Lyrically I don’t exactly remember what he was saying but I think most of the lyrics were good. I might need to follow up on this in this weeks post. Overall not horrible though.
Amaarae/Kali Uchis/Moily/Sad Gurlz luv Money(Remix)
When I listened to the debuts this week I never thought I’d find a song more stupid and annoying than Life goes on, but Wa-La I actually have. First off all 3 of these singer(or 2 because it sounds more like 2) have really annoying voices, Kali Uchis is really not a good singer and Telepatia really told me that, but she doesn’t do good here either. The other singers have really annoying sounding voices also. Lyrically it’s really not great and it’s not radio appropriate, and production wise it’s just basic Latin production that’s very lazy. Overall this makes both Life goes on and Need to know more enjoyable, which is embarrassing to say the least. This is also this upcoming weeks countdown extra. Oh boy how fun is it gonna be to listen to this on the countdown.
Alone by Trevor Daniel also Re-entered this week along with life goes on(which I already explained) honestly I like this song so I don’t mind it being here.
Feel Like Shit by Tate McRae has now earned my best song on Hitbound highlight, as it’s really been growing on me the last 2 weeks. I’d say this may have a chance to debut the countdown this week also.
Our Hitbound exits were MAMMAMIA by Maneskin, The Motto by Tiesto/Ava Max and I hope ur miserable until ur dead by Nesa Barrett. (Insert lots and lots of face palms here) RIP to all of these songs. MAMMAMIA was so good, but I understand why it didn’t make it to the countdown as it’s more of a rock song than a pop song, oh well. I hope ur miserable until ur dead is now actually doing something outside of Hits 1(kinda) so I’m sad that it’s gone. Last but certainly not least we lost the Motto and funny story yesterday I was working out and listening to Hits 1 and they started playing Easy on me by Adele, but in the background I hear a dance class blasting this song, so I tuned the volume down on my phone just so I could hear the Motto. Do better next time Hits 1 this is the third Tiesto song we’ve lost this year, and he’s the biggest DJ on the planet come on.
I haven’t listened to any of the new Adele songs that showed up in the abysss this weekend so I’ll review them in the next post.
We also lost Essence, Hurricane by cheat codes and Justified this week from the abyss. Essence wasn’t great so I don’t really care. Hurricane should’ve gotten more time here although it’s not a hit, and justified could’ve stayed a bit longer to, although it’s losing traction elsewhere, at least it got to be on the countdown for some time though.
I’ll look at mediabase and see what songs need to debut Hitbound in order to make sense and I’ll include that in next weeks post.
Blurbs
First off I forgot to mention the countdown extra which was Ghost town by Benson Boone and after hearing it more, I’ve really grown into it. This is also good cuz it’s now gaining traction outside Hits 1.
Way 2 sexy is at #28 this won’t last here for much longer Oh well.
Stay is at #27 again it’s not gonna be here much longer.
Smokin out the window dropped from #21 to #26 off it’s debut. That didn’t need to happen.
Let’s go to Hell jumped to #24 off it’s #:30 debut which is awesome. I wouldn’t mind if it stuck around.
One right now and Happier than ever made jumps this week. I’m alright with these songs jumping.
Better days jumped from #17 to #14 this week. Could this one to watch be a top 10 hit? We’ll Just have to wait and see.
I realize Beggin won’t be top 5 at this point as it held at #11. Oh well,
Traitor keeps on going back and fourth between #10 and #13.
Ghost is at #6. Can this be Beibers 2nd top 5 hit here?
Oh well for industry baby hitting #1 as it dropped down to #5 this week.
Who’s in your head is now in the top 5 at #4. I love this song and hopefully it can reach higher.
Adele is still holding in 3. This just can’t get to the top can it.
Cold heart is back at #2. Nice.
Shivers held #1 for the 5th week in a row and while I love this song, can we please replace it with something else even if it is Adele for a ridiculously long time.
#1 recommendation for Hits 1: GAYLE-abcdefu(radio edit of course)(shout-out to Hunter for showing me this, it’s a really good song)
My favorite song and last years #1 song: Shawn Mendes-Wonder(1/3 weeks at #1)
My least favorite song from last year: X lovers/Chloe Moriando-Haunt you
Alright now comes the fun part!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Predictions for this week.
Ok so I’ve noticed patterns of how things turn out here. A lot of people say the Hit-maker 5 countdown that’s on every night at 10PM doesn’t impact the countdown, and that’s somewhat true, but I’ve noticed lately that it does at least for songs that are either gonna debut or be in the top 5 or #1 so here’s what I see.
If a song is on this mini countdown and it’s in Hitbound or the abyss it’s more likely to debut.
If a song ends up being #1 on the Hit-maker 5 and is in the top 5 that increases it’s chances of being #1 for the week.
Any song that is in the Hit-maker 5 that’s in the top 5 has a chance of being in the top 5 on the next countdown.
This doesn’t always end up this way as some of us have seen before, but for those 3 things it’s a factor that plays a part in the countdown results I believe. Also I’ve started to realize that if songs have a high ranking in the countdown and they have little AirPlay it’s most likely because social media tends to like songs with less AirPlay.
Based on these factors and AirPlay from XMplaylist combined with what I heard on Hits 1 yesterday here’s my predictions for the countdown for the week of November.25th 2021.
Exits
Stay(27)
Run(23)
A-O-K(16)
Fancy like(15)
These songs have been getting less AirPlay and I haven’t heard any of them when I have listened this week. Combine that with the fact that they weren’t on the Hit-maker 5 for the past 2 nights nor were Fancy like, stay and A-O-K on last weeks survey(that everyone else got except me) I think these will be leaving this week.
Debuts
U Gurl(30)
Feel like shit(27)
I feel good(24)
Message in a bottle(20)
Both U Gurl and I feel good went up in airplay this morning, and are being played every 1-2 hours so that’s a sign they could debut. Message in a bottle is kinda a no brainer since Hits 1 loves Taylor Swift and out of all the other Hitbound songs with spins I feel as if Feel like Shit is gonna make a move and debut, as it has a lot more AirPlay than both soft landing by JP Saxe and Ghost Town by Benson Boone.
Top 5
5. Industry baby(=)
4. Who’s in your head(=)
3. Shivers(-2)
2. Easy on me(+1)
1. Cold heart(+)(1st week at #1)
Ok so right now shivers is still at the top of the AirPlay chart, but it’s not getting as many spins as it did before so it might drop out if the top spot this week. Cold heart and easy on me will jump I think cuz they ended up getting #1 spots on the Hit-maker 5 the past 2 nights, but Cold heart has more AirPlay and overall I’ve heard it a lot more this week than any other song when I’ve tuned into Hits 1, so I think Hits 1 will have this as a new #1 this week. While who’s in your head and industry baby will hold on to their spots.
Biggest jumps of the week: Moth to a flame & the outside(+6) these two songs have been going up in AirPlay plus Hits 1 loves these artists so this would make sense.
Biggest Drop of the week: Guveon-For tonight(-8) This song has been getting very little AirPlay, although when they have played it I’ve heard it.
I think the songs in the top 10 will likely stay the same.
Anyways those are my predictions for the week, tell me what you like about them or agree or disagree with them. I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts.
That’s it for this week, and I’ll see y’all in my next post which will be a full chart review.
