First I will go over all the songs I missed while I was away(which is quite a lot)
The first song is becoming popular at a very unnecessary rate in my opinion. It’s PinkPanthress and Ice Spice’s Boys a Lia, Part 2. To sum it up, this sucks. PinkPanthress has a reaLily high pitched annoying voice that I don’t like and although Ice Spice does a good job and sounds great she adds nothing interesting to this. The production is also super clunky and weird. Talk about too much weird TikTok sounds, this is horrible. Next.
Up next is Bebe Rexha’s new song Heart Wants What It Wants, and I’m pretty impressed with how I’m Good did here, so I was looking forward to this very much. I will admit, that this is her least memorable song, but it’s solid. The production sounds great and Bebe does a really good job on vocals, it’s just slightly forgettable that’s all.
One of my favorite songs right now is Too Well by Reneé Rapp. It debuted Hitbound back in December if you remeber, and then it left and came back to debut the countdown, and ever since then I’ve loved this, and it’s been helping me get through a lot of stress lately, Reneé sounds great here and the production is absolutely amazing sounding and she goes very well with it. I love the writing too, so relatable and catchy. Overall great tune.
Next is Tyla with Been Thinking and this is interesting. I really like her voice here and the production is really cool. It’s not the catchiest song in the world though. Also fun fact Tyla is from South Africa. That’s so cool.
Oh god more Snoozefest Stephen! That’s right Stephen Sanchez is back with Evangeline and this is way worse than Until I Found You(which I didn’t exactly like). I wanna like it, but the production is too slow and Stephen does not sound good at all. It’s also super forgettable, but hey at least it’s not as bad as anything Joji has made, am I right?
Latto is breaking through again with her new song Lottery, yay! I’m not sure who this Lu Kala person is that she collaborated with on this song, but she does a really good job on the chorus and Latto absolutely sounds great on the verses. I also surprisingly like the writing here(I mean it’s not too sexual). The production also gives me a lot of Kiss Me More vibes and it’s perfect for Spring. Great song.
Well as if we haven’t had enough of Harry the clown lately, we now have a new Niall Horan song on the countdown called Heaven. This song is pretty solid, and I think it might be in Green real soon, it’s good though. Niall sounds good and I like the lyrics, the production is a bit slow though and that’s my only complaint,
Players by Coi Leary is one of my favorite songs right now. I’ve been really liking some of these big name female rappers as of lately and this one’s easily the best female rap song I’ve heard in 2023. She does a really great job rapping and her voice isn’t too annoying and once again like in Lottery, I love the bright production and the catchiness in the lyrics, Overall, super catchy and springy bop.
Up next is………………….. The Coi Leray, no wait hold on a second, The Kid Leray? Oh no wait that’s not it either, uh The Coi Leray, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, no wait, The Kid Laroi? Oh yes that’s it, that’s it The Kid Laroi(LMAO, see you cam tell you can turn the names of The Kid Laroi and Coi Leray into a tongue twister) ahhhhhhhem, alright folks, all jokes aside though, next we have Laroi, that is The Kid Laroi on Love Again, and I wasn’t really too big on this at first, but I kinda love it now. Yes the production is slow and boring, but Laroi sounds great here and the lyrics are very catchy and they kinda hit me hard, damn Laroi. I actually tried remixing this song with no success also, so yay for me, uh anyways great song, more of Laroi coming up in Hitbound.
Mimi Webb has a new album out now and a single off that album on the countdown called Red Flags. It’s really good, but it’s not a song that I get stuck in my head or would listen to on repeat for hours either. Mimi sounds good and the production is solid, but it’s forgettable once again,
Weapons debuted and I reviewed it like 4 months ago, so now moving onto my favorite countdown song(which will probably not be my favorite next week, oh well).
It’s Fall Out Boy and their big return anthem called Love From the Other Side. Folks I’ve been jamming to this song a lot lately and it is absolutely amazing. Patrick Stump sounds amazing in every single second of this song and the production is just great, it reminds me of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but in a non-Christmas type of way. I also love the intro, that is amazing and really long and nice. The strings fit in nicely and everything blends in very well. The lyrics also hit hard too, they’re catchy and really really relatable to what I’ve been going through the past few months with people and things in my life. It also has lyrics that make you open up your imagination though and that’s what I do when I listen to this. All around great song, it needs to be more popular outside of Hits 1.
Escapism has faded on me some, but it’s still a great song with very very very very very relatable and fun writing and really cool production. RAYE sounds good and even though 070 Shake is only present for a few seconds in the bridge, I think she does a pretty good job adding to it. The last minute that Hits 1 and other stations edits out is also very cool and well written. Easily the best part of the song. I hope this can continue to dominate and smash.
Kane Brown and his wife Katelynn wrote a song for Kane’s album Different Man, which is now here. Thank God is really nice for a ballad. Kane sounds great, which is quite funny because his wife sounds even more lovely than he does here, seriously she has a GREAT voice. The writing is really nice and heartwarming and very happy also. I hope this becomes a hit here, and it already looks like it is.
This next song aged super well as of events that took place in my life this week, lol.
It’s The 1975 and their song I’m In Love with You. This is a really weird sounding, but great alt song. The guys sound alright here and the production is super cool and chill, it reminds me of something that would be popular in the 80s/90s and it sounds really nice mixed together. The lyrics are cool and catchy too.
I’m Not Here to Make Friends is a song that I really don’t think I should like, but I do because it’s so relatable to my life. Me and all my guy friends are failing to get girlfriends right now, so the song just hits me in the feels whenever I hear it. Now the pre-chorus is a bit weird, but it’s not horrible, and it’s definitely very catchy. I love Calvin Harrises production and Sam and Jessie do a great job on vocals. Only thing I can live without here is the weird and corny intro from Ru-Paul, good thing they edit that out on radio.
I’m not sure if I ever reviewed Kill Bill, but to be short and to the point, it’s catchy but very toxic. I’m not sure why we need songs about Killing Ex’s to blow up, but it was not needed, plus SZA sounds boring and the production while upbeat is the same ole R&B crap we’ve all come to know. Nothing special here, Nobody Gets Me is better,
Bloody Mary is weird, but it’s only weird cuz I cam’y get behind the lyrics or what the hell the message is here, the production is good though and Gaga sounds great. Why couldn’t have this been popular 11 years ago when it was released???????????????
Lizzo has released a remix of Special with SZA and it’s pretty solid. SZA actually adds a lot to the mix and sounds good and Lizzo does her really solid job from the original. Okay, cool.
The only other song I haven’t talked about yet is our current #1 song, which is Flowers by Miley Cyrus, and if you haven’t seen my chart from last week yet on CrownNote, this is climbing up it right now. It’s amazing and very deserving of a #1 spot. Miley sounds amazing here, which is good since I didn’t really love her last few songs, and the production is really well done and the buildup is great. The writing including the reverse Bruno Mars sample is absolutely genius and the lyrics are really catchy. They’re also super relatable and it’s also a very nice little dis-track on Liam Hensworth, so overall this slaps.
Debuts
Our first debut this week was Die 4 Me by Halsey. This is pretty much the chorus of her song with Post Malone and Future from 4 years, plus her verse extended into an actual song. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I’m sorry how is that creative, you guys could’ve had this song on the countdown when it was released 4 years ago 😑. Anyways it might not be too creative of a song, but it’s still great. Halsey sounds great and the trap beat sounds really good and she fits in with it very well, as opposed to the production in So Good(how did I even remember that song existed?). The lyrics, eh they’re basic but catchy. Overall great song I guess. Next.
Our other debut is the lead single off The Jonas Brothers new album titled Wings. This is super cool, I love the production, it reminds me of Best Friend by Queen but also Lost by Maroon 5, which is super interesting, anyways it’s a great mix and the guys sound great and I like the chemistry between them. The lyrics are also really cool, but my issue with this is…………………… it’s…………………. To………………Short. It’s just under or maybe a bit over 2 minutes I believe, and that’s not the typical for lead singles of a band of this magnitude, so I think that they need to remix it and add a feature to it to make it longer and more memorable. It is a very cool song though, but not as good as anything they’ve ever released for that reason. I wouldn’t mind it becoming a hit, but like I said, feature please.
Best debut of the week: Jonas Brothers-Wings
Biggest jump of the week: Kane/Katlynn Brown-Thank God(+7)
Biggest drop of the week: Ava Max-Weapons(-8)
Countdown extra: Nicky Youre-Shut Me Up
Last years #1 song: Ed Sheeran-Oberpass Graffitti(3/5 weeks at #1)
My favorite song from last year: The Chainsmokers-High
My least favorite song from last year: Ed Sheeran/Taylor Swift-The Joker and the Queen
Hitbound
The Kid Laroi-I Guess It’s Love(Debut)
Jax-Cinderella Snapped(Debut)
Loud Luxury/DVBBS/Kane Brown-Next To You(Debut)
Big Boss Vette-Pretty Girls Walk
Halsey-Die 4 Me
Beabadoobee-Glue Song
Nicky Youre-Shut Me Up
Jesse Murph-Where Do You Go(Debut)
Mae Stephens-If We ever broke up
Macklemore/Collett-No Bad Days(Debut)
Gracie Abrams-I Know It Won’t Work
24KGoldn-Bite
Miley Cyrus-Flowers(Demo)(Debut)(Why is this here?????????)
Linkin Park-Lost
Renee Rapp-Bruises(Debut)
Patrick Martin-Damdelion Eyes
Songs I haven’t reviewed yet from previous weeks.
A rapper named Big Boss Vette is going viral right now with this song called Pretty Girls Walk, and this shit absolutely slaps. She sounds great and has perfect flow here, and the beat is so go and slaps so hard, The writing is also very positive and a bit funny, and I absolutely love the intro, LMAO, this is awesome,
Anyone remember Beabadoobee? If not then it’s probably good because she was used for the annoying sample on Powfu’s Coffee for Your Head back in 2020, and it was one of the most annoying things I had ever heard. Her natural voice was not used on the sample of course, but it still sucks, and it definitely shows on Glue Song. She sounds boring and the production is a boring guitar strum throughout the whole song, The writing is eh okay I guess, but the song itself is also too short kinda like Wings is. Can we not make this a hit please,
Wow this song also aged super well this week, What am I going to get into here?
Alright everyone, so Nicky Youre released a new song last week called Shut Me Up, and it’s about…………….Well……………..Asking your crush out, and so I used it as a confidence builder and well……………………..It didn’t go too well, let’s just say that folks, yeah I can’t get a girlfriend right now, but as much as it broke my heart and I’m stuck with JVKE and CharlieonnaFriday stuck in my head(see abyss section for more details below). I love this damn song. The production is amazing and it remind me kinda of Footloose when I turn it on, it’s fun and very upbeat and bright production and it sounds a bit different than both his other songs. Nicky does an amazing job on the vocals throughout and the lyrics are very very very catchy from the start. What else can I say, I may not have gotten my dream girl but damnit I still love this song(note writing this did not kill me, yay)
Oh great, right at a good time for me to review next is Mae Stephens If We Ever Broke Up. This is great. I love the groovy but basic production here and Mae Stephens has a pretty good voice, not the best but good enough for me to tolerate at least. Lyrically this is great also. Nice song,
Why does Hits 1 insist on making Gracie Abrams a thing????????????? I haven’t liked any of her songs I’ve heard and I Know It Won’t Work is not an exception. Gracie sounds bad here, and the production is weird and too slow. Let’s not make this a hit please, next.
Up next is more of 24KGoldn with Bite, and this is really cool. I like the dark and trappy production and Goldn sounds good throughout it. The writing is also pretty interesting, Great song,
Not reviewing the demo version of Flowers, don’t even know why it’s here.
Linkin Park is releasing a 20 year anniversary edition to their 2003 album Meteora, which spawned the huge hit Numb. Numb is one of my favorite songs from Linkin Park, and so I was looking forward to hearing this new one called Lost. This is a really good song, it’s pretty much Numb, but with slightly less energy. The production sounds great and the vocals from the late Chester Benningham(because remember this was recorded in 2003). Sound great, and the lyrics are very nice and well written, and you can definitely see into his mind when you listen to it(because he did have mental issues). Overall very nice song, it’d be cool to see this blow up and become huge.
This singer named Patrick Martin debuted with a song called Dandelion Eyes a few weeks ago, and I can’t really remember what it sounds like, but it was alright. Patrick had an interesting voice and some really good writing, but like I said not really memorable, hence the pink rating.
Debuts
Kicking off this weeks debuts with more of The Kid Laroi, and besides Love Again, I have not been liking his recent music(come on dude, just work with The Chainsmokers or some EDM artist already, you’d work great with them). I Guess It’s Love sucks. Laroi doesn’t sound too good here and the production is just weird and doesn’t fit his vibe or style that well, it’s also a bit too sexual. Yeah skip this,
Oh god no, not another Jax song, I didn’t love Victoria’s Secret, and I most certainly do not like Cinderella Snapped. This is just your average, girly girl, princess trash anthem that sounds very very angry and made into a song that mainstream radio is gonna fuck with just for fun. Jax sounds like she’s screaming angrily here a bit too much and the production is cool, but just boring af, and these lyrics are too dramatic and girly for my taste. Please leave your girly girl shit off this station next time Jax, and to think 90s Kids and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before were great. Next
Alright an actual great song for once and this was a wacky collab that I didn’t really expect to like, but that I LOVE, it’s Loud Luxury and DVBBS new song with Kane Brown Called Next to You, This is great, now it does sorta hit the crush vibes a bit, but that’s alright with me because I really like the slow and sorta melancholy production this gives off, it’s got this upbeat but sad sounding flare and it works perfect with Kane Brown’s voice. The buildup is great and Kane sounds amazing, and I can tell that the writing is all about his wife, that’s really sweet. This is definitely Loud Luxury’s best song. Hopefully this smashes, next,
Jesse Murph is an artist who I’ve tried to get into over the past year, but just can’t cuz like Gracie Abrams, her voice sucks. Where Do You Go definitely shows that, plus the production is super slow and boring. The writing is a bit relatable, but come on Hits 1 we don’t need this shit(much like we didn’t need her last 2 dropouts).
Up next is the next single of Macklemores album BEN. I’ve always loved Macklemore, and so I was really looking forward to this song. This is great. Macklemore does a great job on the verses and Collett has a great chorus. The production and vibe are also very bright and nice. Cool song,
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh why is the demo ballad of Flowers on Hitbound? Yeah that’s not really needed Piff.
Lastly we have more of Reneé Rapp on Bruises, and there’s a deep connection to my life with this song and that is that I’m always seeming to be the person in my friend group that gets all the jokes pulled on them, or that my friends sorta make fun of the most. Do I mind it, kinda, but honestly it’s not that bad and I’m used to it by now. This song is about that exact same scenario, since Reneé sings that she’s always being made fun of by her friends here and that it really hurts her. See with me it doesn’t really hurt as much, but maybe Reneé is a bit more sensitive than I am I’m guessing and so she wrote a song about it. It’s very catchy and fun and Reneé sounds great, but the production could’ve been a bit more upbeat and interesting at least. I prefer Too Well over this, but I still like it a lot. She could definitely be a breakout star of mine this year.
Best Hitbound debut: Loud Luxury/DVBBS/Kane Brown-Next to You
The only exit that stayed surprisingly throughout my hiatus was Hate You by Jordi, and while it was a nice little song, I don’t care that it’s gone. The rest of my opinions will show in next years dropouts rankdown.
The abyss
Harry Styles-Daylight
Rema/Selena Gomez-Calm Down
Charlie on a Friday-That’s What I Get
Lauren Spencer-Smith-Best Friend Breakup
Morgan Wallen-Last Night
JVKE-This is What Heartbreak Feels Like
Zara Larson-Can’t Tame Her
Why is Daylight back after like 4 months??????????????
Calm Down should be on the countdown, wtf Hits 1. I’m continuing to love this one.
Ah, some good ole trap heartbreak music that’s what I need right now, and this new song from Charlie on a Friday is great. It’s better than enough, it’s catchier and has a better sounding trap beat on it. Charlie sounds great(except he does sound like he voice cracks a bit when he sings,” Fell in love with what’s his name,”). Other than that though he sounds great, and the writing is catchy and very relatable. Thanks for helping me try and get over some heartbreak Charlie.
Lauren Spencer Smith has a new song called Best Friend breakup and it’s pretty solid I guess. She sounds great and I really like the writing, but the production is just a bit slow. Oh well, it’s still great. Next.
WOAH, this might be a shocker, do I have a Morgan Wallen song highlighted in Green? Yes I do, but why? Well folks, I listened to a few of his older songs, became attached to them, thought to myself I love this guys voice and then I said you know what fuck all the bullshit people are pissed at him for, let’s just like him for the hell of it, and when I heard Last Night I fell in love with it. The production is really nice and it’s cool that it’s just guitar and a bit of bass mixed with snaps, he works well with that and it sounds great for the radio. He sounds great and I really like the story and lyrics behind This, see you dork have to hate on every artist you think is bad. I still hate Wasted on you though,
Oh wow, this is hitting me hard, in fact who wants to bet this’ll block Flowers for #1 on my personal chart next week? Yeah we’ll see, but most likely that isn’t gonna happen even though I love this next song. It’s the next single off JVKE’s debut album called This is What Heartbreak Feels Like, and I’m going to openly admit that I went into this song listening to it beforehand knowing that I was gonna get my heart broken, and it’s really helped me a lot since then. JVKE sounds great here, even when he shouts in the chorus, and the production slaps and it’s nice and dark. The lyrics are very very very very very very very very very very very very very relatable to my life right now, and he just does a great job at rapping and singing in this. My only complaint is that it’s a bit too short. Amazing song, let’s make this smash please.
We’ll close off the return post with Zara Larson and Can’t Tame Her. This is great. I love the 80s vibe, it reminds me a bit of Let’s Go Crazy by Prince, and Zara sounds kinda like Ava Max here. Overall great song. I hope it can debut.
We only lost Narcissist from Avery Anna and One Night Stand from Lonnie this week. The former was good but forgettable, as for Lonnie, I know I never got to go into too much detail, but I mean we don’t really need him let’s just say that,
Blurbs will return next week, but as far as countdown exits go, I never liked Where do We go now and Uh Oh was great, but getting old,
Recommendations for Hits 1: pretty much anything with the name Sigala attached to it, please and thank you.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see y’all in the next one.
Here are the songs that lost all airplay this week:
ReplyDeleteStephen Sanchez - Evangeline
Renee Rapp - Too Well
SZA - Nobody Gets Me
Shit, I never knew Too Well lost all its AirPlay until just now, that sucks.
DeleteI am not joking, the last time it played was 4 days ago, so I think it will leave the countdown.
DeleteTyler was talking btw
DeleteHearing Too Well right now. I’m not so sure it’ll leave actually it hasn’t dropped a ton on the AllAccess AirPlay. We’ll see what happens though.
DeleteIt actually left the countdown, along with Evangeline (Trey will be happy about the latter)
DeleteExits:
ReplyDeleteToo Well - Reneé Rapp (#26)
golden hour - JVKE (#18)
Evangeline - Stephen Sanchez (#24)
Debuts:
this is what heartbreak feels like - JVKE (#30)
I know it won’t work - Gracie Abrams (#28)
Cinderella Snapped - Jax (#26)
