Nicky Youre(3): Week of July, 23rd 2022(plus a rant on why radio sucks right now)

 

Hello everybody and what’s up? This week was well, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I don’t even know. The countdown was great I guess, but It’s looking like Hitbound is turning to shit once again, as such that I had to write a really really really long rant on why the radio industry(including Hits 1) sucks at deciding what they’re gonna get that’s considered new music, it’s not something that I wanted to do, but it had to happen because I feel like I needed to speak out about how low the mainstream radio world has gotten lately, Don’t get me wrong I Love Hits 1 and I eh decently like other mainstream stations I guess, but there’s just a point to where if they don’t do stuff to my liking that I feel is in direct aim towards what I like, that I get pretty pissed, so I included the rant to partly rage and partly speak about how I truly feel, and if you read it, I just wanna say that yeah while I was quite mad when I wrote it, that it truly came from my heart, I mean you guys might not know how I feel, but when I think about what is and isn’t being offered as new music right now in this world, it really brings me down a lot because it feels like the music world hates what I like right now, so I just wanted to let y’all know about that before we get into the review. Despite how I feel though and what happens in the future Im still planning on blogging the countdown every weekend, and sharing my thoughts, and now with all that blurbing out of the way let’s get into it with this weeks exits.

Debuts 

Alright, so we only got 2 debuts this week. The first one is the new song from Ellie Goulding and Big Sean Called Easy Lover, and I already talked abokt this last week, so I’m gonna make this really quick. Ellie Goulding does a fantastic job vocally here, and Big Sean really backs her up well. His verse is very catchy and nice, and so is his flow. These 2 just fit in together perfectly. The production is really nice to, it sounds like it has some 80s influence on it, and it goes very well with the vibe of the song. The writing is cool to, it’s not exactly the most catchy thing she’s written, but it’s still really good, overall great debut, and I hope it becomes a hit here. Next. 

Alright well, I can see a lot of people in this community ranting about this next song debuting, and while I’ll be ranting about other things(specifically Hitbound) I won’t actually be ranting about this debut. Debuting all the way up at #16 this week is the song from 1985 that’s been blowing up lately, Running up that hill from Kate Bush. Now I’m not sure how most of my readers feel about 80s music, but personally I really like 80s stuff even though I don’t listen to it to it often. Classic rock is a great genre of music, and sometimes I listen to bands like AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden etc, and I bet most people find that to be very shocking considering that my favorite band is an EDM from New York, but that’s just my taste in music personally, and while I don’t really listen to a lot of 80s pop, when I do it’s mostly when I’m with my friends or family and mostly it’s either Prince or Micheal Jackson(cuz I mean who wouldn’t love Prince or MJ). I had heard some of Kate Bushes stuff before this song blew up, but I had never heard this song specifically from her 1985 album Hounds of love. After listening though I can say that this is great. The production is really simple but really upbeat and nice here, I love the melody in it that goes duh duh, duh duh, It’s very catchy and affectionate, Kate Bush has a phenomenal voice and she sounds amazing here, and fits in very well with the production. The lyrics here are very well written to. The song itself is also 5 minutes long, and the best part about it is that Hits 1 doesn’t play the edited version like other stations do, which is super nice,  my only question about this though would be the ending, where there’s a bunch of robotic vocals in the background. Uh that kinda confuses me, but ok I didn’t know 80s songs could have robotic vocals. Anyways great song despite whether it should be here or not, 

Best Countdown debut: Kate Bush-Running up that Hill(get angry all you want at this, but it’s a great song,) 

Biggest jump of the week: Post Malone/Doja Cat-I like you(a happier song)(+7)  I like this song, but it’s starting to become a bit less memorable then when I first heard it. 

Biggest drop of the week: Calvin Harris/Dua Lipa/Yoing thug-Potion(-13)  I don’t mind seeing this drop because Stay with me is much better and will probably replace it soon.

Alright, let’s pause and talk for second,

Ok so obviously Hitbound wasn’t really that bad last week if I’m being honest. I listened and was very surprised with how good the list held up. That was great since the few weeks before that the show had looked pretty bad, so I went into new music Friday thinking oh we’re gonna get some interestingly good new songs on Hitbound this week. Yeah that wasn’t really the case. After having listened to all the new songs that were released this week, I can say that there were only 3 that were good, of course the one that really stuck out to me was the new (maybe single) from The Chainsmokers, I mean that’s just how my taste in music goes nowadays, I can’t help but love every fucking song they release because obviously they’re upbeat, they’re fun and they’re just vibes, so it’s just my nature that makes me love them at this point and I will admit that yeah I might have a little bit of an obsession with them, but I mean come on we all have obsessions with that one artist or in my case artists, and this case The Chainsmokers are mine, just like how Waffle likes Ava Max, Dom likes Tate McRae, Hippo likes Zion & Lennox etc. After hearing their new song I was just so attached to it, I mean it’ll probably block Stay with me at #1 on my chart(unless it hits #1 before this song comes in) now of course what happend, the song called Time Bomb never debuted Hitbound. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! People do I really have to rant again, apparently I do because we can’t make the people that I love have hits, or even get a simple radio deal for once, if you can’t already tell this is really starting to piss me off, I don’t get how 2 guys who broke out years ago then went onto earn multiple #1s can’t get a fucking radio deal nowadays. Its bullshit, especially when it comes to Hits 1 because what happened 3 years ago, well they got the #1 song of 2019, and it didn’t hit #1 on the countdown until it was well off the Hot 100. For God sakes y’all what I’m really trying to say is that it sucks, it sucks how they can’t get a hit nowadays, nor even make it more than a week on the countdown here if they even have a song debut. My gosh y’all, do I need to go slap some sense into the PDs over at Hits 1 because I think I do, ya know I saw a comment recently on my last post that said I’d fire the PD at Hits 1 if I had the power to. Thank you to whoever said that because I would to. The other obvious issue is that America’s taste in music has gone to shit when it comes to the mainstream radio industry, I’ll admit over the past month or so I haven’t been actvly listening to Hits 1 when I have the time to, I’ve mostly been listening to Apple Music, and alright I’ll admit my playlist does get a bit dry sometimes since I mostly listen to all the same songs on repeat, but it’s alright if it’s a bit dry because at least I like the songs and the shuffling rotation is decent enough unlike the rotation on Hits 1. I mean don’t get me wrong I really do like most of the stuff they play, I really really do, I mean there’s only a few songs on the countdown and In their regular rotation that I say I actively dislike or hate, but sometimes their rotation just gets old and annoying. They overplay too many songs, and I see that as a real issue with them, which is bad considering that they have more songs than my local radio stations do, and usually if I listen to those stations they’re always playing different songs most of the time. What I’m trying to say is that radio is not creative in getting shit, nor are record labels when they decide which fucking songs to push to radio(yeah I’m sorry how long has that fucking practice been in place for?) since when did we start pushing only singles? I’m sorry but back in my parents day you’d hear whole albums on the radio, so why the fuck isn’t that the case now because I see non-singles as more creative parts of an album than most songs off an album nowadays, so I just don’t understand why we can’t push them, or what goes through a labels mind when deciding what songs to push?Particularly with So Far So Good it’s so bad because you know these guys are popular, and that they’ve released multiple angles off of it, but they just don’t make the mainstream, yet they should because clearly The Chainsmokers are still popular, I mean they perform at The Wynn in Vegas every weekend and there’s a shit ton of people in the audience at the shows, yet how the fuck are the songs off this new album just not doing well on streaming. I mean for example some of these songs have just over 1 million streams on Spotify, that’s fucking horrible. I can’t even imagine how these guys feel about some of these numbers because they’re so fucked up, even if the songs are singles. I mean do people really have that bad of a taste in music nowadays that we can’t make EDM a thing, come on America do better. I get the appeal to some of these artists that are blowing up right now, I really do, but if it gets as bad as it does now to where we can’t even make 2 Grammy nominated guys who’ve had huge hits before even get a single hit nowadays than America’s taste in music is fucked up right now, I’m sorry to say that and sound like an ass, but it’s the truth people, letting songs go viral on TikTok is not the way to get them popular, I’m sorry but it’s not, just fuck TikTok and let artists do what they do and we won’t have any problems, like we clearly do with my guys cuz god forbid they release a 16 track album with 6-7 singles, yet we can only make 1 of those songs a decent hit, That’s fucked up, and that’s why I’m really frustrated and pissed off right now at the radio industry Hits 1 included. I think I’ve said all that I’ve needed to say here. I like who I like, and radio now doesn’t, great just great. Alright rant over here’s the new Hitbound songs for this week, most of which suck. 

Debuts 

Betty(Get money) is back. Yay, this is one of the songs that’s a saving grace for Hitbound right now. 

Ok so we’re kicking off Hitbound with a debut that I was actually looking forward to quite a bit, before I realized it was a complete snoozefest. It’s Billie Eilish with her new song called The 30th, so Billie released 2 new songs this week, TV, and this, and for the love of God their both horrible. The last time she had a song make the countdown was Male Fantasy, and that song sucked ass, and so does this one for the exact same reasons. The production is boring as hell and completely non-existant. Who the hell would wanna hear this on radio? I love Billie, I really really do, but if she continues to make songs like this than I’m just not gonna listen to her at all. She sounds fine here I guess, but it’s just too boring to even like or pay attention to, hell I couldn’t even get through 30 seconds of this song before I wanted to go right back to listening to Time Bomb just to get away from it, that clearly should tell you that this has a big issue, and well it’s a simple one, it’s boring and shouldn’t be anywhere near radio, why can’t she just stick with her really dark and creepy style like she did with Bad guy and Therefore I am? Those songs were great, even Happier than ever and NDA were good because they were part upbeat and a bit fun for the latter. I love Billie I really do, but she shouldn’t be wasting her talent on boring ballads like this, next, 

Oh God, I did not ask for Ed Sheeran out of all people to collaborate with Russ, especially after Handsomer. Their new song Are you entertained sucks. The production is so basic and very very off and weird sounding for trap. Ed sheeran doesn’t fit in at all, nor does he sound good, and Russ sounds like a jackass just as he did in Handsomer. The writing is dumb to. Please do better next time Ed, you should’ve known better than to stay away from him. Next. 

Oh my God, another song that I had decent expectations for that sucks ass. It’s Kane Brown with his new song called Grand. This is horrible. I mean this shit makes Walker Hayeses songs  and Wasted on you sound awesome. The production is very generic, and Kane Brown does not have the voice to fit in here. I can’t even recognize his voice it’s that bad. Does he have autotune or affects or something on it, because it doesn’t sound like him at all? It’s also completely forgettable, I can’t pay attention to the writing when his voice is as bad as it was on this song. Next, 

Oh hey look a song that’s not exactly horrible, in fact I’d say this one has the best chance of growing on me. Next we have the new single from Panic at the disco’s new album called Middle of a breakup, and it’s actually pretty decent, but not their best song of course. The production is slow here, kinda like in Viva Las Vengeance, and that’s the obvious issue, it just sounds weird, but I think Brendon Uris sounds amazing here. The writing is good to, it’s not all angry sounding and shit, like in their last song. Overall it might take some time to see if I really do like this, but for now it’s not horrible. 

Oh great another shitty debut from an artist who I don’t particularly adore, it’s Fletcher with her new song Beckys not hot. I liked her hit song Undrunk a few years ago, and I’ve tried to get into some of her stuff since then through the Hits 1 Discord server, but her stuff is just not the type of stuff I like. In this song she tried to go all pop-punk style, and she failed miserably. The production once again sounds generic as all fuck, and she absolutely does not possess the right voice for this type of music. She sounds horrible here. The writing is so utterly stupid to.  I can live without her music anyway, next. 

Ok so uh what is this last debut and why the hell is it gonna be a radio single. It’s a new single from K-pop boy band TXT and Iann Dior. I didn’t have very high expectations for this, but I guess it turned out better than I expected, but it’s still not that great. It’s on the cusp of being in red, and that’s solely because no one really stands out or fits in that great here. Iann Dior sounds good I guess, but he’s done way better in his past songs, and the TXT guys just don’t blend in well here with the punk production. It’s just weird as all hell. I think I’ll pass for now. 

We lost Jiggle Jiggle(again), Dress and 2 be loved(am I ready). Did we really have to make Jiggle Jiggle leave Hits 1, I mean the remix could’ve been a hit, seriously? Y’all are so dumb. Dress was good, but there’s obvious reasons as why I think it never debuted(hint the writing), and 2 be loved wasn’t really that good or memorable, so I don’t really care that it’s gone.

Ok, so apparently we now have 2 Doja Cat songs in the abyss because now Vegas, which is the lead single off the Elvis soundtrack is here. I gotta say I didn’t really like at first when I heard a snippet of it, but after hearing the whole thing I really enjoy it. It’s one of Doja’s weakest singles I’d say, and I have no clue how the hell it fits into a movie about Elvis Presley at all since it’s a trap song, but this is pretty good actually, Doja sounds pretty good throughout it and I really like the writing, it’s fun and catchy, and the hook is really intriguing. The production is what makes it a bit weak in the realm of her radio singles, as it’s a bit generic sounding and not the best trap beat I’ve ever heard, but whoever the background singer is makes it 100% better that I don’t really mind. Overall great song, and I hope it does better here then Get into it is Doing. 

Blurbs 

Snoozefest Sam fell 5 spots this week. Great, can we get this outta here as soon as possible please cuz I sick of hearing it. 

Break my soul jumped 4 spots. Yay, I’m starting to warm up to this even more now the more I hear it. 

I like Devil doesn't bargain, but why’s it here still, it should be gone with the amount of AirPlay it has, 

Ass it was hell another 4 spots to #15. Yay, can we get it outta here now cuz I’m kinda sick of it and have been for weeks now. 

How is Boyfriend still here and not falling hard, it’s been off the survey for like a month now. 

Stephen Sanchez is becoming a thing I guess. The song is slightly boring, but at the same time I don’t completely hate it, in fact I wanna like it more if that shocks anyone here because I really like his voice. 

Why is out of time still here and jumping again? 

2Step fell out of the top 5, which sucks cuz it was an Ed Sheeran song that I would’ve loved to hit #1, 

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Supermodel isn’t in the top 5 like I predicted it would be, 

I got 4/5 of the top 5 songs correct on my predictions for the hits 1 Olympics, including that Ava Max would jump into the top 5 with Maybe your the problem. Let’s goooooooooooooooooo, I would love to see this pull a Who do you love and hit #1 way after it leaves the top 40 on mediabase, because it just dropped out. Please make that happen Hits 1. 

Sunroof held off Harry Styles to hold onto the #1 song for the 3rd week in a row, although I know Harry will reclaim that spot next weekend most likely. I really hope that doesn’t happen though even though I like Late night talking. Sunroof is the song of the Summer right now, so it deserves to be at the top. Let’s keep it that way please Hits 1. 

As for our exits we lost Sweetest Pie and 10 things I hate about you. Both these songs are good, but were getting really old and I was burnt out for listening to them starting weeks ago, so I’m glad that they’re gone, now all we need to do is get Numb little bug and Boyfriend outta here.
