Ed Sheeran(4): Week of March, 12th 2022

Hello everyone what’s up. I’m finally on Spring break, so I was really excited this morning to do this countdown and have some time to get this out on time. There was a bit of setback a bit earlier having to do with the abyss(you’ll see when you get there) so this isn’t as early as I expected it to be, so I’ll probably put my personal chart out for this week most likely on Monday, cuz I’ll be busy tomorrow. Anyways, we had a really solid week again here on Hits 1, and a countdown with some really big surprises. Let’s waste no time, here are the exits for this week.

Debuts

Kicking off our debut list this week we have another new Afro-pop song from Omah Lay and Justin Beiber. Called Attention. Honestly after comparing both this and Peru, I’ve kinda decided I’d prefer Peru over this, that doesn’t make this horrible though. I think Beiber has definitely had better songs though because he doesn’t sound the best here, and while I think Omah Lay has a decent voice, you can kinda Barely tell he’s present because he sings a bit too quietly. What I really like about this one though is the darker vibe in the production, it sounds pretty good, and the writing is overall not bad. Overall I wouldn’t mind this sticking around I guess.

Well well well, what do we have next. A really awesome song that’s grown on me, that’s what we have. Next up is the new collab from Camilla Cabello and Ed Sheeran called Bam Bam(I don’t even know how to say the name of this song). Now I didn’t really think I’d like this as much as I do when I first heard it, but man it’s grown on me by a lot. This is so good, Camilla sounds amazing here, and Ed actually fits in really well with the Latin vibe. The production is cool, and it’s overall very upbeat and dance worthy. The writing is great to, it’s about Camillas breakup with Shawn Mendes, and it was well written and very catchy. I love the Spanish parts, they just make it even more fun to listen to. Overall great song. Can we get this to #1 please(never thought I’d be saying that about an Ed Sheeran song)

Lastly we have the return of 5 Seconds of Summer with Complete Mess. Honestly I didn’t think I’d like this as much as I do, but alas I do. It’s not the best thing 5SOS has ever produced, but I’ll take it for what it is. It’s really vibey. I like the production here, it sounds great and it works well with the guys voices. Speaking of them they sound great here, and they sound more like an actual band than in songs like Easier. The writing here is great also. I don’t know why, but I feel this is very God-like writing, yeah that’s weird, but that’s the way I feel about it. Anyways great debut.

Best debut of the week: Camilla Cabello/Ed Sheeran-Bam Bam

Biggest jump of the week: Tiesto/Ava Max-The Motto(+13). Wow! I mean it’d be better in my opinion to have High in the top 10, but that doesn’t mean that this shouldn’t be in the top 10, cuz honestly it kinda deserves to be here for how good it is. Making Tiesto a thing, a nice thing I’d never think Hits 1 would do. Awesome. Let’s go for top 5 next week.

Biggest drop of the week: Lil Nas X-That’s what I want(-6)  I’m not gonna lie, I legit didn’t hear this a single time when I tuned in this week, so how it’s still here I have no clue, but I don’t mind cuz I love this song a lot still.

Debuts

Wow the Hitbound list is starting to look a bit more colorful. That’s the way I like it.

Sunroof Re-entered this week. Awesome, while it probably won’t be a big hit, I’m glad it’s here cuz I’m kinda liking this one right now.

Oh we got a good one incoming y’all. Megan Thee Stallion is opening up for Dua Lipa on her future Nostalgia tour, and right here, right out of the blue we get a collab from them, how awesome. Let’s dive right into this. Dua sounds awesome here, and she surprisingly fits in with the vibe and beat of the song. I really like how she sings a few lines right before Megan’s second verse, I think she personally sounds the best in that part of the song. She just brings the vibe here. Megan just crushes her verses to, she has some great flow and sounds awesome. The writing here, while slightly  sexual is actually really great, it’s fun, it’s catchy and it’s a vibe. Production wise the beat is really cool to. Overall this is kinda a vibe.

Next we have(sighs) a really really really stupid song. It’s another one from the HBO series Euphoria called I’m tired and it’s by Labrinth and Zendaya. Why do we need to make Euphoria music a thing on radio, cuz it sucks. This is worse than How long by a mile, and I actually can’t believe I’m saying this, but after hearing this I’d rather hear The Joker and The Queen on repeat 100 times instead of this, even though I still don’t find that song appealing at all, it’s better than this though. I’ve never been a fan a Labrinth, so someone tell me now why the hell do we need to make him a thing. His voice is just so weird, and it just ruins this song. He underwhelms me so much in this song. Now Zendaya sounds fine, but like The Joker and the Queen, she didn’t need to be a part of this. She doesn’t save it from being horrible because she has absolutely no chemistry with Labrinth here, and she kinda barely contributes to anything if I’m being honest. She’s kinda just singing the last little few seconds of the song. The lyrics are just stupid to, they use the phrase,” Hey Lord.” way too much, and kinda just put different lines after the phrase. That just bothers me, it’s just so dumb. Also the production is barely existent at all, so there’s barely anything to hold this thing up. At least The Joker and the Queen had well executed production that just didn’t work out, but this yeah no. Overall like did we really need this to debut, cuz I would’ve preferred if Bones debuted instead. Next.

Finally we have an interesting song. This ones called Don’t lose sight, and it’s by some brother/sister duo called Lawrence. Now I’m not sure where this comes from, but I know I’ve heard it in a commercial before, but I can’t pinpoint which one, all I know is that this is a pretty solid song. I think Clyde Lawrence sounds great here, and so does Gracie. The lyrics are positive and catchy, and the production while not really the best, holds this up pretty well, especially the buildup in the beginning. Overall I don’t mind this being here.

Hitbound ranking(not including countdown songs)

The abyss

Daisy the great/AJR-Record player

Encanto cast-We don’t talk about Bruno

The Walters-I love you so

Kygo/DNCE-Dancing Feet

The Chainsmokers-IPad

We lost Boys don’t cry, Have mercy, Love nwantiti and Celebrity skin. Boys don’t cry was cool for a bit, but it was never destined to be a hit, so I’m alright with it leaving. Have mercy deserved way better, and I will miss it. Love nwantiti sucked, so I don’t care that it’s gone, and I really would’ve liked to see Celebrity  skin become a hit, but we have Woman and Freaky Deaky, so at least we have other songs from Doja Cat.

So uh by the time I’m getting this list written out I’ve seen that Hits 1 has now decided they’re going to get IPad, so uh that technically means it’s eligible for the abyss. This was first played during The Golden Hour during the 4PM EST time slot, and it didn’t get there when the show first aired on Thursday night cuz it hadn’t yet been released, so Hits 1 must've randomly decided oh we’ll debut this song after Hitbound, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok, I mean y’all could’ve just replaced I’m tired with this, and Hitbound would’ve been a lot better, but ok you do you and be weird Hits 1. Now usually random song debuts in the abyss like this mean 2 things, either 1 this is going to pull a You(my #1 song from last year) where it skips Hitbound and debuts directly to the countdown, or it’ll just be one of those songs that they randomly decide to put into the abyss, then drop cuz they’ll realize oh maybe this won’t debut the countdown. In short, this isn’t really supposed to be a big radio hit even, but it kinda should cuz I think it slaps. This is literally nothing like their other songs, High included. It sounds normal, and it’s actually a pretty chill song. Drew sounds good here, although maybe this is the time I’m realizing some of his vocals might have miner affects on them, cuz it kinda sounds like they’re a bit compressed in parts of the verses, but overall I can deal with it, cuz he has a pretty good voice. Production wise this is really cool and chill, and it’s not all high energy kinda like High is. The buildup is great, the drop sounds normal, and there’s no mumbled jumbled vocals in the breakouts, there’s a bit of a up pitched vocal in the bridge, but it’s not annoying. The writing here is really good to, it’s not exactly like Highs writing talking about change, but it talks about a broken relationship that Drew wishes he could start over again, and honestly I think it was very well executed the way they wrote this, it’s catchy, and very memorable to. Overall idk if it’ll be here for long, but I’m kinda digging this.

Hitbound songs that make sense being here

Megan Thee Stallion/Dua Lipa-Sweetest Pie

Tyga/Doja Cat-Freaky Deaky

Mimi Webb-House on fire

Jena Rose-Checkmate

Labyrinth/Zendaya-I’m tired

Lawrence-Don’t lose sight

Songs that need to debut to make sense

Iann Dior-Let you(as a re-entry)

Diplo/Miguel-Don’t forget my love

Beck G/Karol G-Mamiii

I took Marry me and Iffy off the list cuz Marry me is literally doing nothing besides being an AT40 OTV track and I just don’t see them getting Iffy, nor the song itself being successful since it’s by Chris Brown.

Blurbs

Peru is actually starting to grow on me, it’s really catchy I gotta say and Ed Sheeran actually sounds great here. Now I’m gonna check out the rap remix. Yes there’s a rap remix of this with 21 Savage and Blxst.

emo girl dropped to #29. Oh well I guess it won’t be a hit here after all, which sucks cuz I like Machine Gun Kelly.

Weatherman jumped a few spots. I’m really starting to enjoy this one now. It’d be awesome if they kept it around after it’s one to watch reign.

I’m surprised Message in a bottle and Oh my God are still here cuz they’ve been off the survey for weeks.

It’s kinda cool to see that For tonight is still here, and jumping, although it’s getting a bit old.

Why did Fingers crossed drop. This song is awesome. Come on Hits 1 we need to make this a hit.

Love it when you hate me also dropped. Come on I thought Hits 1 loved Avril Lavigne. Oh Well.

Big energy jumped 5 spots. I’m really impressed with how well this is doing here.

Ghost town finally made it into the top 10. Yay.

One right now dropped. Could we maybe replace this next week with something like High or Big Energy, I’ll even take She’s all I wanna be back in the top 10. This ones just getting straight up old by now.

Unfortunately abcdefu also dropped. Well that sucks. I really thought this had a shot to hit #1, but nope.

Sacrifice is now in the top 5. Nice, although I can see this getting blocked out of #1 in the future.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh well, it’s surprising to see When I’m gone at #2 and both Light Switch and Enemy drop a spot each. No wonder why High isn’t doing well on this countdown, despite having tons of AirPlay. I’m not gonna really complain though cuz it’s cool to see this all the way up here. I can possibly see this hitting #1 in the near future to, but we’ll see what happens. Also I swear Spyder says Alesso’s name wrong, I’m not sure where he gets Aless eo from, but it’s Aless o Alesso Spyder, not Aless eo. lol.

Overpass Graffiti holds at #1 for the 4th week in a row. That’s awesome, although I’d like to see Light switch or When I’m gone up there next week.

As for the exits we lost Do it to it, Ghost and The Joker and the Queen. The only one I’m slightly disappointed by is Ghost because this is its 2nd week at #1 on AT40, so even though it’s old, it really makes no sense to get rid of it early, oh well that always happens now that the countdown is 30 songs though. As for the other 2, The Joker and The Queen, while a lovely executed song was boring and grating as all hell, so I don’t really mind, although it would’ve been nicer if they had kept it around for one reason and one reason only, because I will admit it’s way better than I’m tired, I can still live without it though cuz at the same time it’s super forgettable, I can’t even remember what it sounds like. Nice job trying to make a hit out of a boring ballad, but tanking while doing so Ed Sheeran. Good riddance. We also lost Do it to it. Finally, that was long overdue, no more complaining about this lazily uncreative song, hey no more Squid Game music to, yay because that shit was creepy whenever they’d introduce this song.

#1 recommendations for Hits 1: Regard/Years & Years-Hallucination, Internet Money/24Kgoldn-Options, Clean Bandit/A7S-Everything but you, Big time rush-Call it like I see it and Dreamr/Ruff/Channel Yates-Summer of ‘16

Thanks for reading and I’ll see y’all in the next one.
