Tiesto/Tate McRae(4):Week of April, 22nd 2023
Hey everyone, what’s up? I’ve once again had an exhausting week of work and stress, but that’s it’s all good, only 2 more weeks until I’m done and then I get a break. To quickly follow up on my announcement from last week, I’m gonna be putting a post up soon about my radio research poll and explain for the charts look like complete shit right now. I’ll do it later this week probably if I have time, but for right now let’s just get into this countdown because Hits 1 is doing a great job at keeping up with lots of radio moves right now, way better than any other stations. Here are our exits for this week.

Debuts
I talked quite a bit about both of these songs last week when they debuted Hitbound, so I’ll try and be quick here. First we have Happy by NF. I like this, but despite its title it’s kinda a sad song just because of what it’s about. I actually thought that I really related to this when I heard it, but turns out that I don’t relate to it as much as I thought I did, I like this though. NF sounds great here and he does a great job on the vocals and his flow is really nice. I also like how it’s a bit more pop sounding than some of his previous songs. The production is really nice sounding and I like how it evolves. The length of the song is great too, it’s nice to have a 4 minute song for once on Hits 1. Writing wise this isn’t as catchy as some of his other songs like Lie or Let You Down, but there’s parts that are quite nice like the second verse for example. I also like how it’s about his self-esteem. That’s a very tough subject to write a song about. I think the lyrics are good and deep here, and that’s what I like to see artists write nowadays good personal and deep songs. I kinda hope this smashes.
If you haven’t seen my previous post where I initially reviewed this next song, then I recommend you go and check it out. This is the Jonas Brothers latest release called Waffle House, and what I find the most surprising about this is that it’s not about the actual Waffle House restaurant, but if you take a look at the writing here, it’s about coming together with the people you love to solve problems. I think the writing here is great and very positive and it’s also very catchy. The production sounds great here and I have to emphasize that I just love the 70s soft rock vibe they’re going for now, it’s very nice and sounds heavenly. The guys sound great here as always, and overall it’s just a fun and positive vibe. I hope this becomes a Summer smash.
Best countdown debut: Jonas Brothers-Waffle House
Biggest jump of the week: The Kid Laroi-Love Again(+7) Wow, this couldn’t have happened like 2 months ago???????????? I like this song still, but it’s getting a bit old and is starting to putter out elsewhere. Wouldn’t be surprised if it left in the next month.
Biggest drop of the week: Kane/Katelyn Brown-Thank God(-6) Having the biggest drop after the biggest jump last week, seriously Hits 1?? I like this still, but like Love again it’s getting a bit old now.
Countdown extra: David Guetta/Anne Marie/Coi Leray-Baby Don’t Hurt Me
Last years #1 song: Charlie Puth-Light Switch(1st and only week at #1)
My favorite song from last year: Shawn Mendes-When Your Gone
My least favorite song from last year: Labrinth/Zendaya-I’m Tired

Debuts
Good god what happened to Hitbound this week? We have 10 debuts, which is so rare. Wow, um anyways starting off with just a lovely debut from fucking Labrinth and Billie Eilish out of all people(pun intended). What is Never Felt so Alone, well it’s pretty shitty actually. I couldn’t even make it through the whole thing when I heard it, it’s that bad. I hate the production here, it’s too weird and experimental sounding, which I hate and Labrinth once again sounds like shit here, like in every single one of his songs, and what is with Billie Eilish doing backup vocals? She sounds bad on this production and overall why work with Labrinth out of all people Billie? Come on I’m a fan of yours, you don’t need to be working with a mediocre sounding singer like him. Bad song, I hope this doesn’t become too big of a hit.
Next up we have Post Malones new song called Chemical, and I had high expectations going into this since it’s from Post Malone, but I don’t really see what’s so special about it. The writing and lyrics are cool and catchy and Post sounds alright, but the production in this one just kinda makes it feel a bit empty and forgetful. What else can I say, kinda a boring song. Why are we gonna insist on making it a hit, if we do????????????? Next.
One surprise we got this week on Hitbound that I wasn’t really looking forward to was the new JP Saxe song called I Don’t Miss You, but after listening to this, I can say I kinda like it. The production here is really nice sounding and upbeat and JP Saxe actually sounds good here vocally for once. This is the best I’ve ever heard from him I think. The lyrics are also very relatable and catchy. I’ll take this over Soft Landing anyway. We’ll see if it goes anywhere.
up next is the Hits 1 debut of a singer named Maisie Peters who I’ve heard of just by looking at some people’s personal charts from the community. This is just a decent song right now, but I could see it growing on me. Lost the Breakup has some very relatable and catchy lyrics about how a person can lose in a breakup and I love the groove of the production, it’s really nice. I’m not in love with Maudie’s voice on first listen, but like I said this is catchy enough that I could see it growing on me. Definitely will be keeping my ears plugged to this to see if my opinion changes. I wouldn’t mind it becoming a hit here.
I’ve never really liked Melanie Martinez too much, nor am I familiar with all of her music, yet I guess Hits 1 isn’t quite fond of her either cuz this is her Hits 1 debut apparently and it’s called Void, and like the song I just reviewed it’s just decent for the same reasons. It’s got great production, but I just don’t like her voice. It’s also kinda forgettable.
Well I definitely gad high expectations for this next song from the 3 TikTok queens of 2022 themselves, Lauren Spencer-Smith, GAYLE and Em Beihold have teamed up on Fantasy and wow, this is not so special. The only person who stands out here vocally is Lauren Spencer-Smith, both GAYLE and Em don’t really shine here like they did on their previous songs. I really expected a lot from Em Beihold though especially and she really disappointed me here. The chemistry between these 3 is great, but it doesn’t save the song or bring it up for me. The production is upbeat, but super basic and kinda boring sounding. It’s got great writing also, but it’s just so forgettable. I can do without this one, that’s a disappointment for a song that I had high expectations for. It’d be nice to see if we could get these ladies another hit though with this, it’ll probably fail though. Next.
Lewis Capaldi replaces himself next with Wish You the Best and I really prefer How I’m Feeling Now over this. Lewis sounds really good and I absolutely can connect with the writing with having recently gotten rejected by someone, but this song is just too damn slow and boring sounding. Why did we have to let this song be the next radio single instead of How I’m Feeling Now??????????
I was looking forward to the return of Kelly Clarkson with the 2 new singles she dropped off her upcoming album, but alas both of them suck. Me is the worse of the 2 though. I couldn’t even listen to the whole thing because it was so slow and sounded like it had absolutely no substance holding it up. Kelly also just didn’t sound good from what I heard. I get that these songs are supposed to be super heartbreaking and personal to her, but no Kelly, this is not it. I really hope this doesn’t become a hit, although it probably will.
Next up is Bazzi with a new song called Eyes. I didn’t like the last 2 songs he had on Hitbound last year, but this one is actually kinda good. He sounds good here and the writing is super fun and catchy. The production also fits him nicely and I overall enjoyed the vibe a lot more than I thought I would. I wouldn’t mind seeing this become a hit.
Last but not certainly not least is our best debut of the week from Drake(how ironic). I’m usually very hit or Miss on Drake’s music, but Search and Rescue is one of the best songs he’s put out in a few years I think. I wasn’t really into it at first, but I really like it now. Drake sounds good and I generally like his flow. The lyrics are super catchy and very relatable and enjoyable and the production is very awesome sounding for trap, it’s well produced and fits Drake perfectly. It’s also 4 minutes long, which is super nice. I really hope that this can become a hit here.
We lost How I’m Feeling Now, Kaleidoscope, AM:PM, Calm Down, What it is(Block Boy) and FUMD. Lewis replaced himself with a slightly more forgettable song, that I wish had been released later, so that How I’m Feeling Now could shine, but oh well to that wish, that kinda sucks. Kaleidoscope sucked, so I don’t care. AM:PM is a banger, but it was never gonna gain enough traction with how much radio doesn’t give 2 fucks about great EDM songs nowadays, so RIP to that one. Calm Down is good, but there’s better songs off that album that are better, so I’m not entirely sad to see it go, What it is should’ve stayed because I’m now loving it and it was only here for a week, bullshit and FUMD is gone Thank god, that one is so annoying, but alas now we have Never Felt so Alone, which is slightly better but still sucks. I don’t really care either way.
Best Hitbound debut: Drake-Search and Rescue
The abyss
Rema/Selena Gomez-Calm Down
Morgan Wallen-Last Night
Zara Larson-Can’t Tame Her
Bebe Rexha-Heart Wants What it Wants
Macklemore/Collett-No Bad Days
Havana Winter-Death Wish
Toosii-Favorite Song
Avery Anna-Self Love
Crash Adams-Give Me a Kiss
Favorite song, Self Love and Give Me a Kiss are now here, how surprising.
Missin U and Thousand Miles are gone. Don’t Care.
Blurbs
Sure Thing jumped 3 spots off of its debut. I still don’t find it too appealing, but it may grow on me the more o hear it. I can’t believe though that this is starting to become so popular just now though cuz I can swear I’ve heard this song a long time ago when I was a kid. I could’ve sworn it got played on the radio back then too. I don’t know though. I don’t really care if it’s successful here or not either, but it sure is doing great outside of Hits 1.
River is jumping 3 spots again, yet it’s still not doing well here I heard that Jaded is being pushed as the next single off the album though, so I’m not surprised this stupid song is flopping as hard as it is. They should’ve never sent this to radio in the first place.
That’s not how this works jumped 5 spots up to #24, and I’m fine with that. I mean yeah it’s not the best song here and Charlie Puth does sound pretty bad on it for the record, but I still wouldn’t mind if it had a bit of success on the countdown.
Speaking of song I do mind though, Boys a Liar can fuck off any day now. I swear this is one of those annoying songs you know that you hate, but you get it stuck in your head all the time. Oh my god it’s so annoying, please get this outta here and off radio already.
On the bright side of things though at least Players jumped 4 spots and hit a new peak at #16. I’m very happy about this, although I can’t say that I think it’s gonna be around for too much longer.
I’m in Love with You dropped 4 spots to #15. I thought this was gonna be in the top 10, so it disappoints me to see it drop like that, but oh well there’s always next week right?
I’m surprised by Eyes Closed dropping to #12 after having the biggest jump last week. This song is kinda not connecting with as many people for an Ed Sheeran song, so I’m a bit surprised by this. Look at its streaming numbers and you’ll see what I’m talking about. You could kinda compare it to how High did on the charts a year ago. It flies up the charts and then starts to slow down early. I hate when songs have those types of runs on the charts personally, but it is what it is I guess. I’ve realized myself that it isn’t even as good as when I first heard it, which is why I demoted it this week, but I still love it and I just hope it can stick around for a while and hit the top 5. Let’s not make this High 2.0 please Hits 1.
Bloody Mary has regained its top 10 status. Do not care one bit, it’s starting to get kinda old(pun sorta intended).
Other than those few things mentioned above there’s not much else to talk about or else I’d be still bitching that Lavander Haze is still in the top 5, but whatever. Anyways 10:35 held onto the #1 song for the 4th week in a row, and I am very impressed by this run it’s having. It’s literally about to dead on all of the charts or is dead already and it’s still #1. Hmmmmmmmmmm ya know I can name another EDM that hit #1 like 4 years ago well after it reached its peak on the charts. What’s it called now? Oh right, Who Do You Love The Chainsmokers and 5SOS. This song is kinda doing what that song did, but the only difference is that Who Do You Love stuck around for a while before hitting #1 unlike 10:35, and it also was #1 for only 2 weeks. Of course it was also Hits 1s #1 song of 2019. Why am I mentioning this!??????? I don’t know, I just think it’s fascinating that we get another EDM song hitting #1 on this countdown long after it hit its peak on the rest of the charts. Pretty cool. Let’s keep this going since Tiesto’s album drops next week. Don’t let Niall ruin the fun(although he probably will)
As for our exits we lost Wings and Too Well. Wings was good, but was a fragment of a song that was replaced by the much superior Waffle House, so I don’t care too much that it’s gone. As for Too Well, I wish it could’ve done better, but I’m honestly liking Bruises more now, so I don’t really care about it either.
I also requested a shoutout for the Discord server on this weeks countdown, but unfortunately we never got shouted out. ☹️.
#1 recommendation for Hits 1: ILLENIUM/American Teeth-Insanity
Thank y’all for reading and I’ll see y’all in the next one where I hope you’re either ready for a big fat amazing review or a big fat rant. 👀.
