Tiesto/Tate McRae(3): Week of April, 8th 2023

Hey Guys, what’s up? This weeks countdown was decent, but I’ve had a really exhausting week. Schoolwork is killing me right now, and I’m also dealing with the fact that I really wanna switch my major now, so that I can start thinking about maybe working in radio. I’m taking a class actually for 6 weeks during the summer on the music industry, so I’m looking forward to it, problem is that I’ve been seeing lots of things lately saying that the pop radio format will cease to exist by the end of the decade. I find this to be complete bullshit and very shocking to hear, but I can’t really tell what the truth is with how bad the charts are right now. It’s not to say that the pop music genre is in decline just the radio format, so it’s kinda frustrating me because now I want to work in the pop radio industry, but don’t know how much longer it’ll be here for, Also to coincide with this issue I’m doing some preliminary research before the summer hits all on this issue, and I might wanna show it to my professor who I’m taking the class with, so if y’all could help me out I’ve created a survey that asks a few questions about your opinions on pop radio. The results will remain anonymous and they’ll only be used for my further research on this issue. I’ll leave the survey link both here in the comments and I’ll probably get it up on a page at some point. on the bright side of things though you should check out this weeks countdown and especially Hitbound for a new review and a little surprise right before. Let’s get into it.

Debuts

Alright kicking off our debuts this week is a 13 year old song from R&B singer Miguel called azure Thing, and why does this have to trend I truly have to ask? It’s boring, there’s nothing special about it whatsoever. The production is your classic boring sounding R&B that sounds exactly the same as every other R&B song I’ve heard, and Miguel does not have a great voice in this song. He sounds too much like a rapper here in my opinion, I liked his voice much better on Diplo’s Don’t Forget My Love from last year. That song was good for him, but this, yeah no. No thank you, this song can go away any day now. I hope it doesn’t stick around too long, but I don’t think it will given Hits 1s track record with old songs not doing well on the countdown.

Our next debut is the new song from Charlie Puth and Dan + Shay called That’s Not How This Works. I like this, but I wish I liked it more honestly. Charlie doesn’t have the best vocals on this one, but he sounds good in some parts(mainly the chorus). What I really like about this thought is Dan + Shay, they sound good here and they back Puth up Nicely. There’s a remix with Sabrina Carpenter coming out on Friday, so I’m hoping that it’s a bit better and more interesting, but overall it’s fine. The lyrics are good and the story behind it is interesting, it’s just not that special, although it does have a groovy little bright beat to it also I guess. Overall nothing special but solid I guess. This may fade on me though, but we’ll see.

And last but most certainly not least we have our highest debut going to queen Taylor at #25 with All of the Girls You Loved Before. Y’all know that I really don’t like Taylor anymore, she’s overrated to the point of where it gets fucking ridiculous because your always hearing about her or her music everywhere you go, and in particular that’s not good because I don’t care for any of her post 1989 stuff, besides a few songs off her re-recorded albums. She just doesn’t have as good of a voice as she did when she was younger and she makes boring music, and both of those things are clearly shown in this song, Taylor sounds bad here, and the production is this romantic crappy drum beat much like the other stuff from her album Lover. I didn’t really love that style on the title track of the album, and I most certainly don’t love it here. It’s so bland and boring. The lyrics are alright, but it’s just too boring to get into. Can Taylor please go on hiatus and never come back. I’d really love that.

Best countdown debut: Charlie Puth/Dan + Shay-That’s Not How This Works

Before we get into the debuts I think I’m going to put a photo of how this first debut is already becoming a meme for my football team.

About 3 months ago a lot of people in The U.S know that my hometown Jacksonville Jaguars made national spotlight when they made the playoffs for the first time in 5 years with their newly restructured team and new QB Trevor Lawrence aka T-Law or Sheezy Trev as some of us call him. They made the NFL playoffs and in short failed to make a Super Bowl for like millionth time(cuz usually the team sucks, but now they’re good again with this new kid), anyways 3 months ago Trevor and his friends went to The Waffle House late night after we won a huge game during the playoffs where we came back from a 27-0 deficit to celebrate the victory. Anyways when The Jonas Brothers dropped their new song titled Waffle House yesterday, the jaguars media team posted a photo to their Instagram page of the cover art for the song which featured the JoBros sitting at a Waffle House counter eating, and the media team pretty much cropped in Jags gear that they wear in the photo instead of regular cloths, and then to make it twice as good they cropped Trevor Lawrence in the background. I thought this was so funny that I’m already embracing it and posting it everywhere, so as a fun show and tell thing before I get into my review of the song here is that photo below.

You can clearly see Trevor in the background behind Nick Jonas who’s wearing a shirt that clearly read,” It was always the Jags,” which is one of our team motto’s pretty much. What else can I say, this is a sports media team W. IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS, and ALWYS THE JOBROS. Remember that!

Debuts

Ok, so now onto my actual review of the song Waffle House. It’s great. Not the best song I’ve ever heard from them, but it’s better than Wings by a long shot. The guys sound good here, and I’m really enjoying the 70s pop/alt vibe this is going for, but what makes it better than Wings is that it’s catchier, longer(by only like 30 seconds) and also the writing. This is not about the restaurant itself, but rather it’s about how they came together when they were all younger to help each other out when one of them or one of their friends was stressed out over something. It’s quite positive and a great thing to hear and honestly I wouldn’t mind this becoming a hit, and I think it will given the fact that it has a great title. I’m here for this 100%.

You know what else I’m here for though? This next song, which some people will probably jump the gun and call lazy and uncreative, but is actually amazing in my view. This was so good and legendary that I had to demote AM:PM just for this song. This is David Guetta’s big follow up to I’m Good(Bue). Called Baby Don’t Hurt Me, and if you recognize that name, then you’d probably know that this is a perfect remediation of Haladays 1993 hit What Is Love. This is pretty much a club version of the song rewritten and put to a house beat with an added rap verse from Coi Leray. This is amazing. I love the melody in the beginning that’s played throughout the song. It sounds joyous. The buildup is great, and the drop is awesome. Anne-Marie does a great job on her vocals and I like Coi Leroy’s verse. The rap is catchy and the newly written lyrics are also catchy for Anne-Marie’s Part. The sample is also genius. Amazing song, this will definitely be giving some competition to my current #1 on my chart.

Next we have more of that random Avery Anna girl who had that song called Narcissist that seemed to never leave the abyss a few months ago. This is her new song called Self-Love, and I liked her last song, but this one is honestly way better. She sounds great in this song, and I kinda like the upbeat production, although it does sound a bit weird when it’s all mixed together, but overall it’s not horrible. I also love the lyrics in this song. Personally I’ve had a really shitty week dealing with my emotions and it all spans from the issue of schoolwork and not knowing what I need to do. When I listened to this song though I realized that maybe I need to focus a bit more on myself, as that’s what this is about. The lyrics are good and catchy and honestly it just brings me peace of mind. The good thing though is that when all this shit is over in a few weeks, I get almost 2 months off from schoolwork and stress. I’m excited and wish it could come sooner. I think I’ll keep this on repeat though until then. Great song Avery.

Speaking of another song that hit me hard was this next song from rapper NF, and I’ve never reviewed his music on this blog, but I’ve liked a few of his songs. Let You Down I’d say is my favorite from him, but now we have this new song called Happy, and this isn’t nearly as good as Pharrell’s song of the same name(cuz how could anyone hate that song). This is quite good though. It talks about self esteem, and how NF kinda lost it at a point in time, and well just like how I just stated I kinda lost a bit of mine to this past week, but that’s alright, cuz this song is relatable to that. The lyrics are good and a bit catchy and NF sounds great. I like how this one in particular is much more pop-oriented then rap because he tends to sing more here instead of rap, but he sounds great despite what kind of singing he’s doing though. I also like the basic poppy production. Overall I really like this. I hope we can make it another hit for him.

Our last debut is a song that’s been trending for a bit now from an R&B singer named Doechii and rapper Kodak Blavk(surprise surprise). This is called What it is(Block Boy), and it’s pretty good. Funny thing when I went to listen to this song I accidentally listened to the sped up version first, and I’m not a fan of the sped up crap nowadays, but this is one of the songs where I actually kinda liked the sped up version more than the original, but the original is still great though. Doechii is a really good R&B singer and she sounds good here, and while I don’t love Kodak Black’s verse, it adds something to the song and is catchy, which is a good thing. The production here is really nice and I love how it’s more trap leaning than R&B leaning. The lyrics are also quite catchy. Great song, I’d actually love to see if this is trending and will get a push.

As for our exits, we lost Call on Me, Pretyy Girls Walk, This is what losing someone feels like, and Dandelion Eyes. Call on Me deserved way better, and so did Pretty Girls Walk. I liked the JVKE song, but honestly it was really sad sounding and plus his new song with ILLENIUM is better, so I don’t really care and Dandelion Eyes I never cared about, so yeah,

Best Hitbound debut: David Guetta/Anne-Marie/Coi Leray-Baby Don’t Hurt Me

The abyss

Rema/Selena Gomez-Calm Down

Morgan Wallen-Last Night

Zara Larson-Can’t Tame Her

Bebe Rexha-Heart Wants What it Wants

Macklemore/Collett-No Bad Days

Havana Winter-Death Wish

Tori Kelly-Missin U

Miley Cyrus/Brandi Carlisle-Thousand Miles

Missin U is here, also yeah I still haven’t found time to listen to Thousand Miles. I don’t really care about Miley’s album overall.

Blurbs

River dropped 6 spots, which is a bit surprising given how much people love Miley nowadays, but I on the other hand don’t mind cuz I can’t really get into this one. I’m sorry there’s just nothing that’s interesting about it to me. I think I’d rather have this stay in the bottom 5 of the countdown and in AirPlay.

Ceilings jumped 3 spots to #27, and while it’s still at the very bottom of the countdown, I’d love for it to jump and become a hit. It’s a very lovely song that I’m currently enjoying and it’d be nice to make an independent artist with a now sold out tour have a hit.

Hahahahahahahahahaha, Boys a Liar is flopping, yet it’s in the top 10 of AirPlay. I’m so sick of this song, so I’m hoping the 4 spot drop was a good sign, although let’s be real it’ll probably rebound next week. The quicker we get it out the better.

I Know It Won’t Work jumped 5 spots to #23, and while I don’t really like this song, I am now kinda starting to like her other song that was on the countdown called Where Do We Go Now? I’d replace this song to have that one back on this countdown in a heartbeat.

Wings dropped 7 spots, and this isn’t surprising given the fact that it’ll probably be replaced by Waffle House next week. It’s a great song though and I personally love the style it’s going for, but yeah we need something that’s longer to debut, even if longer means 30 seconds more than 1:58.

Players rebounded and hit its peak again, as it jumped 5 spots to #20. I can definitely hear the New Jersey accent that Coi Leray has now, it’s very visible on this song, and I think the vibe compliments it perfectly.

Love Again jumped 4 spots and hit a new peak of #17. This is good, I like this song, but I don’t see it becoming a huge hit, in fact I’d say it’ll be done here soon.

Nobody Gets Me continued it’s plummet down the countdown, and If I were to guess right now I’d say that it’s done next week since it’s still very low in AirPlay.

Why did Love From the Other Side fall 5 spots?????????????????? I thought this would continue its climb in the top 10 this week.

This is the time where I start to realize that Die 4 Me is not so special.

Bloody Mary dropped 3 spots, and I’m honestly kinda surprised by that, cuz it’s still very much popular. I don’t really mind though since it’s not the best song to come back to life via TikTok.

Escapism jumped 11 spots and is now in the top 10 at #7, and I’d love to see this go top 5, although I don’t see it going too much farther even if it does make it in.

Flowers dropped 4 spots and out of the top 5. Kinda surprised that this is the song they’re letting go of first from last weeks top 5.

Speaking of top 5 songs that can fuck off, will Lavender Haze ever do so?????????? I hate how Taylor is so overrated nowadays.

Replacing Flowers in its place respectfully is Lottery, which rebounded back into the top 5 this week, and if I were to guess I’d say this song is gonna get blocked by not only 1 or 2, but perhaps 3 songs(depending on what hits #1 next).

10:35 held onto #1 for a third week this week, which is surprising given the fact that Heaven is at #3. I’m very happy and impressed by the success this is having here, although Eyes Closed is surprisingly my new favorite song. If this can just hold out and block Heaven until Eyes Closed hits #1 that would be my dream, but I know that probably won’t happen given the fact that this song is already starting to lose a lot of traction outside of Hits 1.

As for our exits besides Missin U, we lost This is what Heartbreak Feels Like and Red Flags. I didn’t really care for the latter, and saw nothing special in it, but I kinda think that the former was robbed of a good run. I mean it has faded on me a bit, but I could’ve seen it becoming big. That sucks, oh well at least my real like heartbreak is over though, so I won’t have to go back to this song unless it’s completely necessary,

#1 recommendation for Hits 1: ILLENIUM/American Teeth-Insanity

Tiesto/Tate McRae(6): Week of April, 29th 2023

Wow, this community is deserted. Why did I leave all of sudden with no word
