Harry Styles(5): Week of June, 11th 2022

Hello everyone, what’s up? This week was really not a week I enjoyed listening to in particular, as it was really whack, and there were a lot of questionable moves regarding abyss and Hitbound songs, however that doesn’t mean it was completely awful. We did gain some really good Hitbound songs, and a few of the countdown entries were alright, I just wanted to make 2 announcements though before we get into it. First, I’m still waiting for Waffle and Scott to submit for Summer Madness, so it might take a few days, but don’t worry it’ll be revealed soon. I know it’s kinda hard cuz me and Hippo made our deadlines for our events the same day, so y’all can have a few extra days to submit if you haven’t yet. Also, I’ll be out of town next week, and I’m unfortunately gonna have to miss the countdown and Hitbound, and with that I also wanted to let everyone know that if your in the Hits 1 Discord, that I might not be as active this Friday-Sunday because where I’m going to be will particularly have no Internet, so I might not be able to connect to the server or listen to the countdown. If someone else over there can take over countdown duties for time that day, that would be great, and um I don’t wanna have to skip next week fully, but I’m thinking I’ll just do a small review of next weeks countdown, instead of a full one, and I hope that I’ll be able to get it out sometime that week(although I do have school so I can’t promise when it’ll come) if I do end up having to skip a week though, then y’all can just look over at Waffles blog, ZestPonds blog or Hippos blog, and I’ll be back that next week with the next countdown. I’ll see what happens though, and we’ll get to that when we get there. Alright with that all out of the way, let’s get on with this weeks exits.

Debuts

Alright kicking off with new music from Post Malone. Our first of 2 debuts from him is the next single off his album Twelve Carot Toorhache titled I like you(a happier song) and it has a guest verse from Doja Cat(so of course you can see why this is being pushed as a radio single). This song is really great, although Cooped Up is better. Post sounds great here, and I think this is easily one of his best vocal performances along with Cooped Up, One right now and Circles. Doja Cat has a really interesting and catchy verse to, and she fits the vibe perfectly. The production here is nice, it’s a great Summer vibe, and the trap sounds very well produced for radio. The lyrics are all interesting and catchy. Overall it’s a really great song, although it’s nothing too special compared to Cooped Up.

Next we have easily my new least favorite song on the countdown, it’s from Panic at the disco out of all artists and it’s called Viva Las Vengeance. I usually love Panic at the disco songs, so this really really surprised me as to how bad it was. It’s definitely the worst thing I’ve ever heard from them, and it just disappoints me. The production starts off really cool actually, until Brendan Urie comes in singing. He sounds really bad here, and the production really starts to take a bad dive when he starts singing it goes from all joyous to really bad sounding, and even though it brings back the joyous sound later in the song, it just doesn’t sound good, and it feels like a really bad mood change in my opinion. That’s my take on it. The writing here is very very weird and super questionable to, it just leaves me utterly confused as to what was going on when they wrote this. Overall this is just a horrible sounding song from them, and I hope it doesn’t become a hit, although it probably will cuz Hits 1 loves Panic at the disco.

Next we have a song that’s actually been really growing on me this past week. It’s called Jiggle Jiggle from Duke & Jones and Louis Theroux. This is actually pretty solid. Louis Theroux sounds great here, although he does have autotune on his voice apparently, which I found interesting, cuz when you listen to it it doesn’t sound like he has autotune on his voice, but he does. It just makes his voice sound more interesting, and it doesn’t bring it down at all in my opinion. The lyrics are funny as all hell also, and I can’t help but laugh anytime I hear this. I don’t know what it’s about exactly, but given the lyrics that I hear when I listen to it, and the fact that the guy who wrote this is just a journalist from the UK, I’m assuming that this is just making fun of the rap genre, which in a realistic perspective isn’t good because there’s a lot of people who love rap out there(me included), but at the same time it’s funny as hell, especially if that’s what this is about. I used to hate rap, so I can kinda feel this guy if that’s what he’s talking about here, the production is super bland here, but it actually holds this up pretty well. Overall not bad I guess, really funny song. Oh boy it’s gonna be fun to see what this is gonna do here.

Next we have another song from Post Malone, and this one is called Wrapped around your finger, and it’s definitely not as good as the other songs I’ve heard off his recent album. This is straight up basic pop, but by Post Malone, and it’s decent I guess. Post sounds alright, although he could sound better, and it does kinda sound like he has some effects on his voice here also. The writing is really good here actually, it’s catchy and creative, what really brings this down though is the production, it’s just basic drum beats kinda like the ones used in One right now, but even more boring. Overall this is decent, but it shouldn’t be a hit, and I don’t think it will be,

Lastly we have Hold my hand Re-entering. This is a great song, so I’m perfectly alright with it. One interesting thing though that I found out this week, that I thought would be cool to share, This song, is of course from the Film TopGun Maverick, and it’s doing quite well right now outside of Hits 1 actually, but what’s really interesting is that it’s actually predicted to become a hit. According to this website called HitPredictor, where people rank songs based on surveys to predict future hits(kinds like Hits 1) this song actually has the highest score right now, and is predicted to be a future top 10 hit. Will that happen here or anywhere else, you’ll just have to wait and find out, I just found it interesting.

Best Countdown debut: Post Malone/Doja Cat-I like you(a happier song)

Best Countdown entrant-Lady Gaga-Hold my hand

Biggest jump of the week: Harry Styles-Late night talking(+11) I’m super happy by this, although I’m a bit surprised because it doesn’t seem like this has a ton of AirPlay. I’m totally fine with this jumping though, as it’s one of my current favorite bops,

Biggest drop of the week: Tate McRae-She’s all I wanna be(-8) As much as I love this song, it’s has a great run here, and I think it’s time that this drops and let’s Don’t Come Back replace it. Great song though and it’ll never be forgotten by me.

Debuts

Alright, so we’re kicking off Hitbound with a brand new song from Marshmello and Khalid. If you remember they first collabed 5 years ago on Silence, and that’s the song that really got me into both of them honestly, it’s such a good song, and one I like to revisit from time to time, definitely both artists best work(although Friends was a bop as well for Marshmello) after 5 years they teamed up again on this new song called Numb, and also another thing I found interesting was when I listened to the mashups Hits 1 on 1 about this song yesterday, I was surprised that Marshmello finally revealed his voice. I never though that would happen, so that’s really cool. Numb is a really good little tune. I was slightly underwhelmed by Khalids vocals at first, but after listening a few times, I don’t really mind how he sounds here. This is a unique sound for him, and he takes it on super nicely. Marshmello did a really interesting job producing this to. This sounds more like a house song, but it’s very much radio appropriate sounding house. The whistling compliments the background very well, and the overall vibe is nice, bright and shouts Summer to me. The writing is super catchy to, and I can tell they really had some fun writing these lyrics because they just sound so happy and fun. Overall, this isn’t as good as Silence, but it’s a pretty fun and great song overall.

Halsey released a new song the other day titled So Good, and of course Hits 1 picked up on it cuz well it’s Halsey, and radio loves Halsey. I’m not sure if I’ve really ever talked about Halsey music here besides I Am Not A Woman, I’m A God, but I pretty much enjoy all her music, the only 2 exceptions being Now or Never and Bad at Love. This new song of hers is really good. The production here sounds more poppy, instead of alternative or rock, and it’s nice to see that for once, although I will say that I think she does have a great voice for that type of music. This sounds great though, the production compliments it really well, and Halsey sounds fantastic here, I’d easily say that this is her best vocal performance I’ve heard from her. The writing is so intriguing to, it’s about how she wishes that she could be back with her ex, and it’s really great and catchy, overall, great song I’d love to see it do well here.

Next we have another single off of Lizzo’s upcoming album. This one is called Grrrls. I’ve been really enjoying About Damn Time lately, and by now you can probably tell it’s my favorite song on the countdown as of this week, so I expected something along the lines of that song going into this, and what I got was completely different, and caught me off guard. The production here is trap, and while it’s well produced, it does not sound great with Lizzo’s voice. She sounds so stupid here, and the lyrics are supposed to be fun, they just don’t sound good at all, overall very stupid song that we didn’t need. I hope this doesn’t become as big as it’s predecessor.

When I heard this next song was coming out, I was kinda excited to check it out, but when I heard it I was very disappointed. This is a new single from previous Hits 1 to watch Eddie Benjamin, who’s song Weatherman did decently well here for a while after being one to watch. This is his new song called Only you, and it features a verse from Alessia Cara. Eddie Benjamin doesn’t sound good here at all, and that’s partially to blame for the production, it’s very slow and has a romantic vibe, and Eddie Benjamin being Australian that does not help his voice at all, cuz his accent takes away from it here, it just doesn’t sound good over this production. Alessia Cara doesn’t even sound great here either, and the same issues apply with her voice. Her accent is just too much here. Overall I think this would be better if and only if 2 other artists we’re singing it, and if it was remixed. It’s boring, and trashy and I’m pretty sure no one wants to hear this on pop radio. Next.

Next we have the return of Demi Lovato, and they have not had anything out since September 2020, when they had a song with Marshmello called Okay not to be okay. I’ve always liked Demi, and I think she can really pull off any pop vibe, but when I heard this song I was a bit caught off guard, but in a good way because this turns out to be a pop-punk song, and it sounds great. I don’t think it sounds as good as Demi’s previous work(besides anyone)  but it’s perfectly fine. Demi sounds great here, and I really like the pop-punk production. The lyrics are interesting as well. The only problem with this is that it’s not catchy, so it’s not too memorable in the long run, but other than that, I’m totally fine with this sticking around.

Next we have some new R&B singer named Muni(pronounced Money) long, and this is her new song called Baby Boo, with rapper Saweetie. This is cool I guess. They both sound great, but my main issue is deciphering who the hell is who here, cuz They both have similar voices, the production here is alright, but very forgettable at the same time, as well as the lyrics. Yeah this is just okay.

Lastly we have a song that’s been tending at pop radio for a while now, and it’s finally here. This ones called Dress and it’s by singer Charlotte Sands. This is great, Charlotte Sands has a great voice here, and she really fits in with the production, which is basic, but really cool and upbeat The writing here is a bit weird though, I don’t think I exactly wanna get into what I think this is about, but Um okay I guess. Solid song, but I don’t think it’ll stick with me in the long run because of the writing.

As for the Hitbound exits, we lost Overthinking, Too precious, gfy, Don’t lose sight, and something to someone. I’m super pissed that Overthinking is gone because I ended up really growing into it this week, and it’s now one of my favorite songs, they could’ve given it a better chance, and if sucks to see it go. Too precious was a very solid song, but I never saw it becoming big here, like Numb little big did, so I’m alright with it leaving. gfy is a great song, but there’s obvious reasons as to why it had to go. Don’t lose sight is finally gone after spending like 3 months in Hitbound and not even debuting, and while it is a solid song, I’m a bit glad that it’s gone, and I knew it was never gonna debut anyways, and finally why did we have to get rid of Something to someone, it was a great little song, although it was slow. It deserved way better that to drop out after a week, but oh well I guess.

Best Hitbound debut: Halsey-So Good

The abyss

Diplo/Miguel-Don’t forget my love

JVKE-This is what falling in love feels like

Harry Styles-Music for a sushi Restaurant

The Chainsmokers-I Love U

Calvin Harris/Dua Lipa/Young Thug-potion

Doja Cat-Get into it(Yuh)

Lauren Spencer-Smith-Flowers

Kate Bush-Running up that hill

Hits 1 are you guys even trying with I Love U at this point? It kinda gets ridiculous to a point when after I’ve been attached to the song for a month now, and they’re still not giving it a big push, that I have to physically tell them on my survey that maybe they need to push it a bit more. I mean I come to listen to them everyday expecting to hear it cuz it’s my favorite song right now(as everyone else listens to hear their favorites) but this one is the only song that I really like that they’re seeming to have a hard time with, and maybe it’s just because it’s not popular at all, but come on really, not popular doesn’t mean we can’t push it. They can do way better with the artists that had their #1 song of 2019 Come on now.

We gained a really interesting and quite surprising new song this week. I really do come to question why some of the garbage that’s currently on Hitbound is there, and not this next song I’m about to talk about. 37 years ago in 1985 this song called Running up that hill was released by a singer named Kate Bush. I can’t remember where exactly it peaked on the top 40, but I know it did pretty well, but it never hit the top 10. In 2022 the song was re-mastered and used in the current season of the show Stranger Things, and because of that it’s now becoming popular again and is being re-serviced to pop radio, including Hits 1 I guess. It would be so cool to see this debut the countdown, but since it’s in the abyss, ya never know how that really could go nowadays. In short this is super solid. I haven’t listened to the original, just the remake, but I’m sure it sounds exactly the same as this. The 80s production is just fantastic here, and I love the disco vibe it goes for, The writing is super good, and a bit catchy, and Kate Bush sounds okay here I guess. Her voice Kinda is a bit weird and throws me off anytime I hear it, but I think she fits in well here, and I’ll get used to it as I hear it more. The only real part that sucks about this is that it’s over 5 minutes long, which is way too long for a radio song, but with the way Hits 1 is, I don’t think that’ll be a problem. Overall pretty good song. Kinda cool to have on radio, even though it doesn’t fully belong here.

We finally lost I love you so this week, Yay, yay, yay. I couldn’t stand that song at all, so I’m very happy that it’s finally gone.

The rest of this fucking abyss will be talked about in the blurbs,

Blurbs

It’s so satisfying to see To the moon drop 4 spots after it Re-entered a few weeks ago.

Why did Skyline have to fall, it’s such a great song, As much as I like Numb, I really hope that it doesn’t replace this, because this is a really different and unique song for Khalid, and I’m really enjoying it right now. Come one let’s give this a big jump next week Hits 1.

Until I found you jumped 8 spots. I’m really surprised by that given the fact that it’s not big, and that it sounds like it comes straight out of the 1950s. lol.

If there’s a song on the countdown that I think Hits 1 needs to try a little harder with its First Class, come on this might actually be the biggest radio song in the country soon, and it’s sitting at #20 here. Absolute bullshit Hits 1.

Out of time fell, and I’m really starting to get bored with this one, so I’d prefer it leave sometime soon.

10 things I hate about you is now in the top 10, and while I would’ve slightly preferred Late night talking over this, I guess I’m alright with it. It’s really starting to burn out on me though.

Bones is back in the top 10 at #7. I can see this possibly hitting top 5 next week.

Uh woah, Sunroof is at #3. I never thought it would get this far here, when I first discovered it back in February. This is truly the song of the summer, and it’d be nice to see it hit #1 here, but even better than that.

Lizzo is still being blocked, and this is now my favorite countdown song, come on don’t fuck this up Hits 1, y’all know it’s a great song, just give it the #1.

Ass it was held into #1 again for the 5th week in a row, and I truly lost count of how many weeks it has had up there this morning cuz it seems like its been forever. I still like this a generous amount, but I think it’s time for Lizzo or Nicky Youre to take over at the top.

As for the exits. I’m really fucking shocked that Potion left, and I hope it returns soon. Flowers is nice, but I can live without it. Get into it(Yuh) was treated so unfairly, and I hope they realize that it’s probably gonna be Doja’s  next #1, and that they’ll re-enter it sometime soon. Cooped Up was replaced by I like you, although I’m gonna miss it cuz it’s better than that song, and honest is finally gone, and I can rejoice because that was truly a horrible song for Beiber, and thank God it didn’t get too big here.

#1 recommendation for Hits 1; Lost Frequencies/James Arthur-Questions, The Chainsmokers/Ship Wrek-The Fall & Why don’t we-How do you love somebody

Thanks for reading and I’ll see y’all in the next one, which will be sometime in the coming weeks.

Wow, this community is deserted. Why did I leave all of sudden with no word
